As the day comes to an end and I sit here wondering if I would talk to a couple of people before my eyes close, I realize that talking to them would mean getting a text message, a FaceBook communication of some sort or tweet. Social networking is not as social as I think it was intended to be.
Merriam-Webster defines social as "...pleasant companionship with friends..."
What happened to the days of picking up the phone to call and just hear a persons voice? What about calling to say I was just thinking about you? Everybody has a phone that allows them to reach out using a techno-hand instead of a human hand.
I want the real thing. I want social encounters with people, in person, face to face.
I want to really reach people again. I don't want to post what's on my mind...I want to talk about it. I don't want to tweet a quick synopsis of my current thoughts...I want to talk about them with someone who doesn't mind sharing more than two minutes of their time with me. I don't want to write a note about the movie I just watched, I want to sit down and have a real conversation so we can compare notes. When I checked, I want to check in with at least four other people that bring positivity to my life.
Social networking, companionship....
I am not saying that social networking is wrong and has not proven to be beneficial. I can keep up with more people than every before now. I just can't reach them. Networking is the cultivation of productive relationships.
Social networking isn't so social right now (to me).
